Local sports preview (Saturday)

The Cape Breton West Islanders are on the road for a pair of weekend games in the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League.

They visit Halifax.

The Islanders (6-16-0), winners of back-to-back games, are tied with Sydney for seventh in the eight-team league with 12 points; Halifax (17-6-1) is second with 35 points.

The teams have met twice so far in their four-game season series; Halifax won both meetings.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Cape Breton West travels to Cole Harbour Sunday morning.

 

The Northern Selects play the Penguins in their final Nova Scotia Female Midget AAA Hockey League until the new year.

The Selects (17-0-0), perfect through their first 17 league games to start the 2019-20 season, are in top spot in the seven-team league with 34 points, five points up on second-place Halifax; the Penguins (4-11-3) are sixth with 11 points.

The teams have met once so far in their four-game season series- the Selects shutout the Penguins 6-0 in Pictou Dec. 7.

Puck drop at the Pictou Co. Wellness Centre is 12:30 p.m.

 

There are a pair of games in the Antigonish Rural League.

The Heatherton Warriors play the County Outlaws at 7 p.m.; the St. Croix Angels square off with the Pleasantdale Panthers at 8:30 p.m.

Both games are at the Antigonish Arena.
