Local sports preview (Saturday)

Both StFX hockey teams are on the ice for AUS action.

The X-Men (9-11-3), winners of two of their last three, are in Charlottetown to play the UPEI Panthers, who have won two of the first three games in the five-game season series between the teams.

The X-Women (14-5-1) meet the Moncton Blue Eagles at the Keating Centre in Antigonish.

StFX, with wins in four straight regular season games and eight of the last nine, sits third in the eight-team conference with 29 points, two points behind UPEI for second, and three points ahead of fourth-place UNB; they’ve already clinched a playoff spot.

It’s the first of back-to-back home games for the X-Women, who host last-place Mount Allison Sunday afternoon.

StFX has won the first three games in the four-game season series.

Both games get underway at 7 p.m.

 

The Antigonish Bulldogs are on the road in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League.

They visit the Liverpool Privateers.

It’s the first game in the two-game season series between the teams.

Game time is 7 p.m.

 

The Cape Breton West Islanders travel to New Glasgow to play Pictou Co. in the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League.

The Islanders won the first game in the season series between the teams 4-3 in Port Hood in December.

Puck drop at the Pictou Co. Wellness Centre is 4 p.m.

 

The two local teams in the Nova Scotia Female Midget AAA Hockey League play a weekend home-and-home series.

The Panthers host the Northern Selects in Membertou.

The Selects (19-0-0), who are perfect through their first 19 regular season games, lead the seven-team league with 38 points, five points up on second-place Halifax; the Panthers (5-9-5), winless in six straight league games and eight of their last nine, are tied with EDZA East for third with 15 points, 18 points behind Halifax for second, and two points ahead of fifth-place EDZA West.

It’s the third game in the four-game season series between the teams; the Selects won the first two in November.

Game time is 5 p.m.

The teams meet again in New Glasgow Sunday afternoon.

 

The Novas play the first of back-to-back home games in the Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League.

They host the South Shore Lumberjacks.

The Novas (16-6-0), winners of seven of their last eight regular season games, are second in the 12-team league with 32 points, two points behind Bedford for top spot, and two points ahead of Truro, Kings and the Gulls, the three teams tied for third; the Lumberjacks (9-11-2) are ninth with 20 points.

It’s the third and final regular season game between the teams; the Novas won the first two.

Puck drop at the Antigonish Arena is 5 p.m.

The Novas host Bedford in a match-up of the league’s top two teams Sunday morning.

 

There are a pair of high school hockey games on the local sports schedule.

The SAERC Saints host the Dalbrae Dragons at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre in the Cape Breton West High School Hockey League.

It’s a match-up of teams at the top of the standings in the five-team league; the Dragons (10-0-2), who are undefeated in regulation in the regular season, are in top spot in the five-team league with 31 points, five points up on the second-place Saints (9-1-0), winners of nine of their first 10 league games.

The teams have split the first two games in their four-game season series.

The Dr. J.H. Gillis Royals visit the Hants East Tigers in the first half of a weekend home-and-home series in the Northern Nova Scotia High School Hockey League.

The Royals doubled the Tigers 4-2 in the first game in the four-game season series in Antigonish in October; the teams meet again in Antigonish Sunday night.

Both games get underway at 7 p.m.

 

Two games are on the Antigonish Rural League schedule.

The Heatherton Warriors play the Pleasantdale Panthers at 7 p.m.; the County Outlaws square off with the St. Croix Angels at 8:30 p.m.

Both games are at the Antigonish Arena.

 

The province’s two Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams are on the road.

The Cape Breton Eagles play the Charlottetown Islanders for the second time in as many nights; the Eagles won Friday night’s game in Charlottetown to take a 3-2 edge in the nine-game season series between the Maritimes Division opponents.

The Halifax Mooseheads, coming off Friday night’s win in Victoriaville, play their second of three road games in three nights when they square off with the league-leading Sherbrooke Phoenix.

It’s the first game in the two-game season series between the teams.

Both games get underway at 7 p.m.

The Mooseheads wrap up their three-game weekend trip through Quebec in Gatineau Sunday night.

 

The StFX track and field teams enter the second day of their latest competition.

The X-Men and X-Women are taking part in the Athletics NS Meet in Halifax.

The event got underway Friday.
