Local sports preview (Saturday)

The Antigonish Bulldogs are on the road for their second game in as many nights in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League.

The Bulldogs, who beat Pictou Co. at home Friday night, are in Membertou to meet the Miners.

The teams have played once so far; Antigonish won 2-1 in a shootout at home in their season opener in October.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The Cape Breton West Islanders are in Bridgewater to square off with the South Shore Mustangs in a pair of games in the Nova Scotia U18 Major Hockey League.

The Islanders (3-2-1), who have lost two of their last three, are fourth in the eight-team league with seven points, a point behind Pictou Co. for third, and a point ahead of fifth-place Sydney; the Mustangs (2-4-0) are tied with Cole Harbour for sixth with four points.

Game time is 7 p.m.

It’s the first game of the season between the teams, who meet again in Bridgewater Sunday afternoon.

The two local teams in the Maritime Major U18 Female Hockey League are on the road.

The Cape Breton Lynx (2-6-0), who have lost back-to-back games and four of their last five to sit last in the four-team league with four points, visit Halifax (4-2-2), who sits second with 10 points, at 3:30 p.m.

Halifax won the first game in the four-game season series between the teams 2-0 in Bedford in October.

The Lynx visit the Penguins in Dartmouth Sunday afternoon.

The Northern Selects (5-1-2), who have lost once through their first eight regular season games and lead the league with 12 points, are in Dartmouth to play the Penguins (3-5-0), who are third with six points, at 5 p.m.

It’s the second game in the four-game season series between the teams; the Selects won the first 6-0 in New Glasgow in October.

The Selects return home to host Halifax Sunday afternoon.

The Cabot Highlanders host the Kings for a pair of weekend games in the Nova Scotia U16 AAA Hockey League.

The Highlanders (4-2-0), who have won back-to-back games and three of the last four, are in a three-way tie with the Armada and Admirals for second in the nine-team league with eight points, two points behind the Thunder for top spot, and three points ahead of the two teams tied for fifth; the Kings (1-3-0) are in a three-way tie for seventh with two points.

Puck drop at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre is 6 p.m.

It’s the first of four regular season games between the teams, who play again in Port Hawkesbury Sunday afternoon.

The Novas play back-to-back road games in the Nova Scotia U15 Major Hockey League.

They visit the Bedford Barons.

The Novas (2-5-1), winners of two of their last three, are 10th in the 12-team league with five points, a point behind the Barons (3-5-0) and South Shore, the two teams tied for eighth with six points.

Game time is 5:30 p.m.

The Novas travel to Truro to take on the Bearcats Sunday afternoon.

The province’s two Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams remain on the road to wrap up their respective weekends.

The Cape Breton Eagles visit River Denys’ Colten Ellis and the Charlottetown Islanders for the second time in as many nights.

The Islanders won Friday night’s game between the teams to take a 2-1 edge in their 12-game season series.

The Halifax Mooseheads, coming off Friday night’s road win to Pomquet’s Logan Chisholm and Acadie-Bathurst, stay in New Brunswick to square off with the Saint John Sea Dogs.

Halifax won the first two games in that 12-game season series by identical 5-4 scores at home, with both needing extra time.

Both games get underway at 7 p.m.
