Local sports preview (Saturday)

The Strait Pirates return to the ice in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League.

They meet the Miners in Membertou in their first game since Nov. 29.

The Pirates (3-4-0) are tied with Pictou Co. for fourth in the five-team Sid Rowe Division with six points, a point back of Eskasoni for third; the Miners (6-2-2) are second with 14 points.

It’s the third game of the season between the teams; the Miners won the first two.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The Cape Breton West Islanders host Dartmouth in a pair of weekend games in the Nova Scotia U18 Major Hockey League.

The Islanders (7-6-2), who have lost back-to-back games and three of the first four since play resumed, are tied with Pictou Co. for third in the eight-team league with 16 points, five points behind Dartmouth (10-4-1) for second.

Dartmouth won the only game in the season series so far, 3-2 in November.

Puck drop at the Al MacInnis Sports Centre in Port Hood is 6 p.m.

The teams play in Port Hood again Sunday afternoon.

The two local teams in the Maritime Major U18 Female Hockey League square off when the Northern Selects host the Cape Breton Lynx.

The Selects (13-1-2), who are perfect since play resumed and have one loss in 16 regular season games, are in top spot in the four-team Nova Scotia division with 28 points, 13 points ahead of the Lynx (7-8-1), who are tied with Halifax for second and are also perfect since the re-start.

The teams have met four times so far, with the Selects winning all four games.

Puck drop at the Pictou Co. Wellness Centre is 3 p.m.

The Selects and Lynx square off again in New Glasgow Sunday afternoon.

The Cabot Highlanders are home for two games in the Nova Scotia U16 AAA Hockey League.

They host the Admirals.

The Highlanders (6-6-0), who snapped a two-game losing streak with an overtime road win against Cape Breton Thursday, are tied with the Kings for fourth in the eight-team league with 12 points, a point behind the Armada for third, and four points ahead of the sixth-place Voyageurs; the Admirals (7-3-0) are second with 14 points.

It’s the first game of the season between the teams.

Puck drop at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre is 6:30 p.m.

The Highlanders host the Voyageurs Sunday afternoon.

The Novas travel to Halifax in the Nova Scotia U15 Major Hockey League.

They visit the Bedford Barons.

The Novas (5-10-1), who have lost three straight, are 10th in the 12-team league with 11 points, three points behind South Shore for ninth, and a point ahead of the 11th-place Valley; the Barons (7-8-1) are eighth with 15 points.

The teams have split the first two games in their season series, with both decided by one goal.

Game time is 5:30 p.m.

The Novas visit Halifax Sunday afternoon.

There are a pair of games in the Antigonish Rural Hockey League.

The Heatherton Warriors play the Pleasantdale Panthers at 7 p.m.; the County Outlaws square off with the St. Croix Angels at 8:30 p.m.

Both games are at the Antigonish Arena.

These are the last regular season games before the playoffs get underway.

The Halifax Mooseheads host River Denys’ Colten Ellis, Antigonish’s Sean Stewart and the Charlottetown Islanders in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The Mooseheads, coming off Friday night’s home loss against Cape Breton, are second in the six-team Maritimes Division, trailing the Islanders (15-4-0), who are in top spot with 30 points.

Charlottetown leads the season series 5-2 through the first seven games.

Puck drop at Scotiabank Centre is 4 p.m.
