Local sports preview (Saturday)

The Cape Breton West Islanders visit the Valley Wildcats for a pair weekend games in the Nova Scotia U18 Major Hockey League.

The Islanders (7-8-2), who have lost four straight and six of their last seven, are fifth in the eight-team league with 16 points, a point behind Pictou Co. for fourth, and two points ahead of sixth-place Cole Harbour; the Wildcats (9-7-1), who sit third with 19 points, have won two of the first three games between the teams.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The teams tangle again in Berwick Sunday afternoon.

 

The Cabot Highlanders are on the road in the Nova Scotia U16 AAA Hockey League.

They visit the Admirals.

The Highlanders (7-7-0), with wins in two of their last three games, are fifth in the eight-team league with 14 points, a point behind the Armada and Kings, who are tied for fourth, and two points ahead of the sixth-place Voyageurs; the Admirals (8-4-0) are second with 16 points.

It’s the second game of the regular season between the teams; the Highlanders won the first 3-0 in Port Hawkesbury Feb. 13.

Game time is 6:45 p.m.

The Highlanders return home to host Cape Breton in the latest edition of the Battle of Cape Breton Sunday afternoon.

 

The Novas are on the road for their only game of the weekend in the Nova Scotia U15 Major Hockey League.

They visit the Valley Wildcats.

The Novas (7-10-1), winners of back-to-back games, are 10th in the 12-team league with 15 points, two points behind Bedford for ninth, and two points ahead of the 11th-place Wildcats (6-10-1).

The teams have met once so far; the Novas won that game 4-3 in Antigonish in November.

Game time is 5 p.m.

 

There are a pair of games to open the Antigonish Rural Hockey League playoffs.

The County Outlaws (3-6-0), who finished last in the four-team league with nine points, square off with the St. Croix Angels (6-2-1), the league’s top team with 19 points, at 7 p.m.; the Pleasantdale Panthers (4-5-0), who finished third with 13 points, play the Heatherton Warriors (5-4-0), who were second with 14 points, at 8:30 p.m.

Both games are at the Antigonish Arena.

Games two in both series are Feb. 27.

 

The Cape Breton Eagles visit River Denys’ Colten Ellis, Antigonish’s Sean Stewart and the Charlottetown Islanders in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The Eagles (10-12-0) are tied with Acadie-Bathurst for third in the six-team Maritimes Division with 20 points, six points ahead of fifth-place Saint John; the Islanders are in top spot.

Charlottetown leads the season series 5-2.

Game time is 7 p.m.

Cape Breton visits Halifax Sunday afternoon.
