Local sports preview (Saturday)

The Cape Breton West Islanders host the South Shore Mustangs in a pair of weekend games in the Nova Scotia U18 Major Hockey League.

The Islanders (9-9-3), winners of back-to-back games, are fourth in the eight-team league with 21 points; the Mustangs (2-15-2) are last with six points.

Cape Breton West won the first two games in the season series in Bridgewater in November.

Puck drop at the Al MacInnis Sports Centre in Port Hood is 6 p.m.

The teams play again in Port Hood Sunday afternoon.

The two local teams in the Maritime Major U18 Female Hockey League open their respective first-round playoff series.

The Northern Selects host the Penguins at the Pictou Co. Wellness Centre at 3 p.m.

The Selects (15-1-2), who had just one loss during the regular season, finished in top spot in the four-team Nova Scotia division with 32 points; the Penguins (3-14-1) were last with seven points.

The six-game season series was a sweep, with the Selects winning all six by a combined score of 47-5.

The Cape Breton Lynx visit Halifax at 3:30 p.m.

The Lynx (7-10-1), who lost back-to-back games to finish the regular season, were third with 15 points, three points behind second-place Halifax (7-7-4).

Halifax had a slight edge in the six-game season series between the teams, with three wins, two losses, and a tie.

Games two in both series are Sunday afternoon.

The Cabot Highlanders are on the road in the Nova Scotia U16 AAA Hockey League.

They visit the Valley Wildcats.

The Highlanders (10-7-0), winners of three in a row and five of their last six, are fifth in the eight-team league with 20 points, one point ahead of the sixth-place Kings; the Wildcats (2-12-1) are seventh with five points.

The teams have met twice so far, with the Highlanders winning both games in Port Hawkesbury in January.

Game time is 3 p.m.

The Highlanders remain on the road to face the Kings in Sackville Sunday morning.

There are a pair of playoff games in the Antigonish Rural Hockey League.

The Pleasantdale Panthers play the Heatherton Warriors at 7 p.m.; the Warriors lead the best-of-seven, league semifinal 2-1 after a game three win March 7.

The County Outlaws square off with the St. Croix Angels at 8:30 p.m.; the Angels are up 3-0 in that first-round series.

Both games are at the Antigonish Arena.

Games 5 in both series are scheduled for March 19.

The Cape Breton Eagles host River Denys’ Colten Ellis, Antigonish’s Sean Stewart and the Charlottetown Islanders in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The Eagles (11-16-1), losers of four straight, are last in the six-team Maritimes Division in terms of points percentage; the Islanders (22-4-0) are in top spot in the division, and the entire league.

Charlottetown leads the season series 7-2.

Puck drop at Centre 200 in Sydney is 7 p.m.
