Local sports preview (Sunday)

The StFX men’s hockey team hosts a do-or-die game three in their AUS quarterfinal series against the Acadia Axemen.

StFX won the opening game of the best-of-three series at home Wednesday night; Acadia stayed alive with a win in game two in Wolfville Friday night.

Puck drop at the Keating Centre in Antigonish is 7 p.m.

The winner advances to the AUS semi-finals; StFX meets Saint Mary’s if they win, while Acadia takes on UNB if they win.

 

The Cabot Highlanders play is at home game in the Nova Scotia Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

The Highlanders game last night was cancelled.

The Highlanders are last in the eight-team league; the Armada, who have won the first three games in the five-game season series, are second.

Puck drop at the Antigonish Arena is 1:30 p.m.

 

The two local teams in the Nova Scotia Female Midget AAA Hockey League play the second game in their respective best-of-five, opening round playoff series.

The Cape Breton Panthers visit Halifax at 2:15 p.m.

Halifax won Saturday’s opener in Bedford.

The Northern Selects host the Penguins at the Pictou Co. Wellness Centre at 5 p.m.

The Selects won Saturday’s opener in New Glasgow.

Games three in both series will be played in March, following a break for the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alberta.

 

Inverness’ Kenzie MacPhail and Team Nova Scotia play their second of three preliminary round game in men’s hockey at the Winter Games in Red Deer.

Team Nova Scotia lost to Ontario Saturday night, take on Team Quebec in Group A action at 3:30 p.m.

They face Team New Brunswick Monday; the qualification round gets underway Tuesday.

Matt Fraser of Antigonish competes in the preliminary round of boxing at 9 p.m. (corrected); the semi-finals are Monday.

 

The Novas play their final regular season game of the 2018-19 Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League season.

They’re coming off a road loss against the league-leading Gulls Saturday; they host the Cougars.

The Novas have won the first two games in the three-game season series.

Puck drop at the Antigonish Arena is 11:30 a.m.

 

The Antigonish Bantam AA Bulldogs went 3 -0 in Round Robin play at the Bantam AA tournament Summerside.

Bulldogs advance to face Chebucto Atlantics at 8 am

 

Cape Breton West are in the Female Bantam AA playoffs.

They won their first game against Metro West Blue on Saturday and lead the best of 3 series, 1-0.

Game 2 goest at 2:15 in Dartmouth.

Series winner advances to provincials March 8-10 in Sydney

 

St. Andrews’ Declan Smith and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles visit the Sherbrooke Phoenix in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

It’s the third road game in as many days for the Screaming Eagles, who won against the Armada Friday night, then lost to Drummondville Saturday night.

It’s the second and final regular season game between the teams; Cape Breton won the first 5-1 in Sydney in January.

Game time is 4 p.m.
