Local sports preview (Thursday)

Antigonish’s Landyn Pitts, Kara and Ella MacLean and Team Nova Scotia play in the women’s hockey quarterfinals of the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alberta.

They take on Team Quebec.

Nova Scotia (0-2-1), who shutout the Northwest Territories 9-0 in their qualification game Wednesday night, was last in Group B following the preliminary round; Quebec (3-0-0) went undefeated to finish in top spot in Group A.

Game time is 10:30 p.m.

The winner moves on to the semi-finals Friday night; the loser will play in the placement round.

 

The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles host the Saint John Sea Dogs in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The Screaming Eagles (34-20-5), with one win in their last five, are in a three-way tie with Moncton and Charlottetown for sixth in the 18-team league with 73 points, 11 points behind Rimouski for fifth, and two points ahead of Sherbrooke and Chicoutimi, the two teams tied for ninth; the Sea Dogs (12-42-5) are 17th with 29 points.

Cape Breton has won five of the first six games in the nine-game season series between the Maritimes Division opponents.

Puck drop at Centre 200 in Sydney is 7 p.m.

It’s the first of back-to-back games between the teams, who square off again in Sydney Friday night.
