Local sports preview (Thursday)

The StFX men’s soccer team opens play at the 2019 U Sports championship in Montreal.

The X-Men, who lost to Cape Breton in the AUS final Sunday and are the tournament’s eighth seed, take on the Carleton Ravens, the OUA champions and the top seed in the tournament, in the quarterfinals.

Kick off is 11 a.m.

The winner advances to Friday’s semi-final against the winner of the UBC-UQTR quarterfinal; the loser moves to the consolation bracket of the tournament.

Meanwhile, four StFX soccer players have been named to national all-star teams.

X-Men midfielder Dan Hayfield is a men’s first team all-Canadian, while defender Josh Read was named to the men’s second team; X-Women forward Amanda Smith is a women’s first team all-Canadian, while midfielder Mercy Myles was named to the women’s second team.
