Local sports preview (Thursday)

The Novas play their second game in the major bantam division of the 2020 East Coast Ice Jam Hockey Tournament in Bedford.

The Novas (1-0-0), who beat PEI’s Eastern Express 7-2 in their tournament opener Wednesday afternoon, face New Brunswick’s Port City Sharks (0-1-0), who lost their first game, at 9:15 a.m.

Their third and final preliminary round game is against the Moncton Hawks Friday night.

The Cape Breton West Islanders play their first two games in the tournament’s major midget division.

The Islanders meet the Central Impact (NFLD) at 1:30 p.m. and the Western Kings (NFLD) at 9:30 p.m.

They square off with the Charlottetown Knights in their third and final preliminary round game Friday morning.

The playoffs get underway Saturday; championship games are Sunday.

 

The StFX basketball teams host the Dalhousie Tigers in AUS action in Antigonish.

The X-Men (4-4), winners of two of their last three, are tied with Memorial for second in the eight-team conference with 12 points, 10 points behind the undefeated Tigers (8-0) for top spot, and two points ahead of Cape Breton and UNB, the two teams tied for fourth.

The X-Women (1-7), with losses in seven of their first eight regular season games, are tied with the Tigers (1-7) for seventh in their eight-team conference with two points, six points back of UNB for sixth.

Dalhousie beat both StFX teams in Halifax in November; the teams meet again in Antigonish Saturday night.

The women get underway at 6 p.m.; the men tip off at 8 p.m.
