Local sports preview (Thursday)

The Cabot Highlanders return home to try to wrap up their first-round series in the Nova Scotia U16 AAA Hockey League playoffs.

The Highlanders have the Fundy Thunder on the brink of elimination in the best-of-five series after wins in games one and two in Truro March 26-27.

Puck drop at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre is 7 p.m.

The Highlanders can complete the sweep and advance to the second round with a win; a Thunder win forces a fourth game in the series in Port Hawkesbury Saturday afternoon.

The Halifax Mooseheads host River Denys’ Colten Ellis, Antigonish’s Sean Stewart and the Charlottetown Islanders in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The Mooseheads (13-15-8), who have won two of their last three, are fourth in the six-team Maritimes Division in terms of points percentage; the Islanders (28-4-0) are in top spot in the division, and the entire league.

Charlottetown leads the season series 11-2.

Game time in Halifax is 7 p.m.
