Local sports preview (Wednesday)

The Strait Pirates meet the Miners in Membertou to finish off their home-and-home series in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League.

The Pirates (24-2-1), who won Tuesday night’s game in Port Hawkesbury 3-2 in overtime, have won seven straight and 19 of their last 20, and have clinched top spot in the Sid Rowe Division; they have 49 points, nine points up on the second-place Miners (18-6-4), and three points ahead of East Hants for first overall.

It’s the fourth and final regular season game between the teams; the Pirates have won the first three.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.

 

The SAERC Saints visit the Eskasoni Warriors in the Cape Breton West High School Hockey League.

The Saints (7-4-1) are third in the five-team league with 20 points, six points behind the two teams tied for first, and eight points ahead of fourth-place Dalbrae; the Warriors (1-8-0) are last with three points, nine points back of Dalbrae for fourth.

SAERC has won the first two games in the four-game season series.

Game time is 7 p.m.

 

The Dr. J.H. Gillis Royals are on home ice in the Northern Nova Scotia High School Hockey League.

They host the Northumberland Nighthawks.

The Royals (3-8-1), with one win in their last four, are last in the five-team league with 10 points, three points back of Northumberland (4-8-3) for fourth.

The teams have split their first four regular season games.

Puck drop at the Antigonish Arena is 6:30 p.m.

 

Both of the province’s Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams are home.

St. Andrews’ Declan Smith and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles host the Drummondville Voltigeurs at Centre 200 in Sydney.

The Screaming Eagles (31-15-4), who have one loss in their last six, are sixth in the 18-team league with 66 points, five points behind Rimouski for fifth, and three points ahead of seventh-place Charlottetown; Drummondville (37-10-2) is third with 76 points.

It’s the first of two regular season games between the teams, who meet again in Drummondville Feb. 16.

The Halifax Mooseheads host the Charlottetown Islanders at Scotiabank Centre.

The Mooseheads (36-11-3), winners of three straight and seven of the last eight, are fourth with 75 points, a point behind Drummondville for third, and four points ahead of fifth-place Rimouski; they’re ranked eighth in the country.

The Islanders (29-15-5) are seventh with 63 points.

Halifax has won five of the first six games in the nine-game season series between the Maritimes Division teams.

Both games get underway at 7 p.m.

 

The StFX basketball teams host Acadia in AUS action.

The X-Men (5-10), who have one win in their last four, are tied with Memorial for fifth in the eight-team conference with 16 points, four points behind Dalhousie for fourth, and six points ahead of Acadia (4-11) and UPEI, the two teams tied for seventh.

It’s the second and final regular season game between the teams; StFX beat Acadia in Wolfville in November.

The winless X-Women (0-15) are last, four points back of Saint Mary’s for seventh; Acadia (12-3) is second with 34 points.

Both games are worth four points in the standings.

The women get underway at 6 p.m.; the men tip off at 8 p.m.
