The warden of Inverness Co. lost her job, then regained it.
Councillors voted 4-2 in favour of removing Betty Ann MacQuarrie from the warden’s chair at Thursday’s regular municipal council meeting; Alfred Poirier, the municipality’s deputy warden, was removed by a unanimous 6-0 vote.
A vote for a new warden followed; MacQuarrie and Poirier were nominated for the position, with that vote, which was done by secret ballot, ending in a 3-3 tie.
The Municipal Government Act indicates the winner is decided at random; MacQuarrie’s name was picked from a hat, so she regained the job.
Poirier and Jim Mustard were nominated for deputy warden; that ended in a 3-3 deadlock, and Poirier’s name was picked from the hat.
MacQuarrie also survived a vote on her leadership during a special council meeting in June.
