Man charged in drug bust scheduled to return to court

A suspect arrested after a drug bust in Port Hawkesbury is expected back in court Thursday.

RCMP say officers searched a home in Cameron Ct. in the town in Aug. 2017.

They say they seized cocaine, hydromorphone, dexamphetamine and other drug paraphernalia.

Police originally charged Joseph Allison Sponagle, 28, of Havre Boucher and Destiny Hope Matthews, 26, of Inverness Co. with possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine, hydromorphone and dexamphetamine.

Sponagle and Matthews elected to be tried by judge alone in Nova Scotia Supreme Court; they were committed to stand trial, but re-elected to provincial court, and Sponagle pleaded guilty to the cocaine count in July.

The remaining charges against both were withdrawn.

Sponagle had a sentencing hearing in October; the judge in the case is scheduled to deliver a decision in Port Hawkesbury Provincial Court.
