Paqtnkek man arrested in relation to attempted murder case expected for sentencing

One of two suspects from a First Nations community in Antigonish Co. originally charged with attempted murder is scheduled to return to court Wednesday.

Michael Kane, 37, of Paqtnkek also faced counts of aggravated assault, uttering threats and several breaches.

Kane, who has been in custody since his arrest, was denied bail in June 2018.

He pleaded guilty to three counts- aggravated assault, uttering threats and a breach- in April; he’s expected back in Antigonish Provincial Court for sentencing.

Nigel Henderson, 28, of Paqtnkek originally faced charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and several breaches in the case.

Henderson pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, obstruction and a breach in October; he was sentenced to four years in prison and a five-year weapons ban in November.

RCMP say officers responded to an assault involving three men, who were known to one another, on a roadway in Paqtnkek in June 2018.

They say a 24-year-old Antigonish man was taken to hospital, and was released three days later.

Police say both Kane and Henderson were arrested without incident- Kane in Paqtnkek the same day as the incident, Henderson in Baddeck the next night.
