Mayor says people need to be kind after difficult year

The mayor of the Town of Antigonish says the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on many people.

Laurie Boucher says there were financial impacts, including on a personal and family level, town businesses, and the town’s own bottom line.

She says the effects of the pandemic go beyond money.

In a year-end interview, Boucher tells The Hawk it will be a different holiday season.

“Many (are) not seeing their relatives, (there’s) not as much financial ability as other years,” she says. “I’m asking everybody to be kind (and) be patient with other people- we don’t know what people are going through.”

Boucher says the challenging year doesn’t mean there weren’t accomplishments in the last 12 months.

She says she’s proud of what they were able to get done in the town.

“We saw the opening of the town and county’s skateboard park, we also saw major renovations to the tennis courts, so now they can accommodate pickleball players as well,” she says. “We had enhancements at Chisholm Park.”

Boucher says town officials were able to host a virtual Canada Day event, and their new dog park has been very busy.

She says it’s been a difficult 2020, but she’s hopeful for a prosperous and healthy 2021.

The entire year-end interview is available below.
