Mayor says provincial officials paying for CBRM reps’ share of wastewater plant is unfair

The mayor of Mulgrave says if town officials have to pay for their new wastewater treatment facility, their counterparts in the CBRM should as well.

Ralph Hadley says officials in both municipalities agreed to cost share the construction cost of their respective wastewater treatment projects at 27 per cent, but then provincial officials decided to cover CBRM reps’ contribution.

He says they both entered into a cost sharing program, so it’s not fair, and they’ve got to fight it.

During May’s regular town council meeting held virtually Monday night, Hadley said CBRM officials are better able to handle the cost than Mulgrave reps.

“They have a lot more infrastructure and commercial base than we have,” he says. “If we’ve to to pay, they should pay.”

In a letter to Chuck Porter, the province’s municipal affairs minister, Hadley says CBRM reps’ portion would be roughly 18 per cent of their total budget, while Mulgrave’s contribution is 111 per cent of the town’s overall budget, and it doesn’t make sense.

He says he’s talked- or tried to talk- to a number of provincial officials, but the only response he’s gotten is there’s nothing they can do.
