Mayor says she’s looking forward to new collaboration

The Mayor of Port Hawkesbury says she expects a historic level of cooperation between the town and Richmond Co.

After November’s regular council meeting Tuesday night, Brenda Chisholm-Beaton said the town and Richmond Co. share many opportunities.

Chisholm-Beaton said that makes them natural partners.

“One thing that we had hoped to achieve in the 2016-2020 term was to have our first historic joint council meeting of Richmond Co. and the town of Port Hawkesbury,” she said.

A request for such a meeting came just months ago, amid a dispute between the municipalities over fire service in Point Tupper, but it did not happen.

Chisholm-Beaton said she does not think they are limited by the response of that former council.

“I am quite confident that we will be able to get to a point, where we will be able to have that historic, first joint council meeting between our two councils,” she said.

Richmond Co. electors did not re-elect a single incumbent councillor in October’s municipal election.
