Antigonish town officials are projecting an increased surplus for the current fiscal year.
Councillors heard an update on 2019-20 budget projections at November’s regular town council meeting Monday night.
After the meeting, Laurie Boucher, the town’s mayor, said they’re almost $200,000 ahead of where they thought they would be.
“With the amount of capital expenditures that we’ve had this year, and the work that we’ve done, to come in under budget is something that the staff work very hard (at) and take pride in,” she said. “(They’re) not cutting any corners- just doing a lot of hard work with their pencils.”
Town officials originally projected a surplus of $34,000; their latest projection puts the surplus at $231,000.
Boucher said it’s good to have extra money available heading into winter.
“With the weather starting to get colder, you have no idea- that could be spent in a snowy week, for sure,” she said. “As of right now at mid-season, it’s looking pretty good for a surplus in the spring.”
Boucher said the town’s various department heads have done a good job taking care of their budgets.
