Shop Local Day supports small businesses- mayor

Tuesday is Shop Local Day in Port Hawkesbury.

Town councillors issued the Shop Local Day proclamation at January’s regular council meeting Jan. 5.

Brenda Chisholm-Beaton, Port Hawkesbury’s mayor, tells The Hawk councillors want you to consider how your dollars can help small business owners through these challenging times.

“(We want to) make citizens a little bit more conscious of their consumer choices,” she says. “If we all commit to buying local as much we can, it’s all going to contribute to the overall health and wellness of our local economy.”

Chisholm-Beaton says small business owners often have a lull this time of year.

She says the proclamation is a small thing they can do during COVID-19.

“The town of Port Hawkesbury supports them,” she says. “We’re willing to promote small business and do what we can to also help our business community through the hardships and the challenges of COVID-19.”

Chisholm-Beaton says some small business owners might not make it through the pandemic without support from their communities.
