Mayor says town mourns for former resident killed in mass shooting

The mayor of Antigonish says the whole community is in mourning following the death of RCMP Cst. Heidi Stevenson.

Stevenson died in the weekend shooting and arson spree that started in Portapique, Colchester Co. Saturday night, and ended when officers shot and killed the gunman in Enfield Sunday morning.

She grew up in Antigonish, graduating from Dr. J.H. Gillis High in 1989.

Laurie Boucher, Antigonish’s mayor, says she didn’t know Stevenson personally, but they shared friends, and she knew her mother.

Boucher tells The Hawk the tragic event showed these types of things don’t just happen in big cities.

“We don’t expect our little town or our province to be affected by something so tragic, something that we usually read about from somewhere else,” she says. “It does bring it a little closer to home.”

Boucher says councillors took time to acknowledge the victims, their family members, and the work done by first responders during the rampage during April’s regular town council meeting Monday night.
