Mayoral candidate says residents asked him to run

A candidate for mayor in the Quad Counties says he put his name forward because residents asked him.

Archie MacLachlan is challenging Brenda Chisholm-Beaton, the current mayor, in Port Hawkesbury.

He says many people came to him following a social media post by Billy Joe MacLean, a former long-time mayor, criticizing current town leadership.

MacLachlan tells The Hawk he doesn’t think that’s the main reason people asked him to run.

“There was a lot of people that came to me- independent of Billy Joe for sure- that are not satisfied with how the town of Port Hawkesbury has progressed in the last number of years,” he says. “For whatever reason, there’s been a lot of people in the town of Port Hawkesbury who’ve come to me and think that I can do the job as mayor.”

MacLachlan says he doesn’t agree with how MacLean raised his criticism, but there’s still a lot he can do to move the town forward.

He says he considered making the jump in the past, but the time was finally right to step into municipal politics.

“I am late getting out of the gate, there’s no question about that,” he says. “It’s a relatively short campaign, but we still got lots of time to get out.”

MacLachlan says he decided to file his nomination papers a week before Tuesday’s deadline.
