Meeting in Mulgrave to discuss school repurposing

Members of a committee say they want the old school in Mulgrave repurposed.

They say the main focus of the meeting will be public consultation for the repurposing of the former Mulgrave Memorial Education Centre.

Basil Ryan, the director of the Mulgrave and Area Revitalization Committee, tells The Hawk they’ll have to pick an idea that’s best for the entire town when the school is repurposed.

“We talked about seniors housing, we talked about immigrant housing- there (are) any number of good ideas that are available to us,” he says. “It’s just a matter of kind of flushing them out, (looking) at the cost benefit of each one of those, and seeing what’s the best direction for us to go from the perspective of the community.”

Ryan says Monday’s meeting is set to get underway at 6 p.m.

He says more meetings will take place Wednesday.

“On the 17th, we’ve more targeted type of engagement with our senior population, with the youth population, with the community groups and so on,” he says. “(We’ll) try to start out some of the ideas and options that might be available to us as we move forward to repurposing the building.”

Ryan says meetings have already taken place with representatives from other communities who went through a similar process.

He says this meeting is an opportunity for residents to set committee members in the right direction.
