Members of local group considering options to replace credit union

Margaree’s credit union branch is set to close Monday, but members of one community group say they’re trying to find ways to keep a credit union in the area.

Brian Peters, the chair of the Margaree Save Our Credit Union Committee, says they want a branch to open in Margaree Forks, adjacent to the existing Co-op.

Peters tells The Hawk a branch at that location would better serve residents, and it would attract more members.

“There’s a strong consensus in our community that if the branch was at Margaree Forks, there would be a greater level of support.”

Peters says their goal isn’t to stop the East Coast Credit Union branch in Margaree from closing.

He says they’ll work to attract a new credit union if the current operators don’t want to open a new branch.

“We feel that we can still do our work and we can still attract a credit union branch to Margaree Forks, even after the Margaree branch closes,” he says. “If ECCU continues with their plan to leave our community, we will make an effort to attract another credit union from Cape Breton Island to set up a branch at Margaree Forks.”

Peters says a branch near the community’s Co-op would create a community hub, which would benefit both businesses.
