MODG councillors discuss placement of bulky waste containers

Councillors in the Municipality of the District of Guysborough had some spirited debate on containers.

Questions regarding bulky waste drop-off sites came up during April’s regular municipal council meeting Wednesday afternoon.

A motion, which was based on a staff recommendation, to put a container in Country Harbour for bulky drop-off passed 4-3, while a motion to send the issue back to staff to re-evaluate was defeated 4-3.

After the meeting, Vernon Pitts, the warden of the municipality, said it comes down to not having enough personnel to do everything everyone wants.

“The next thing councillors are going to be coming to the table saying, ‘Why is (my park) not up and running? Why is (the grass not cut at) my playground? Why are the flowers not in?'” he said. “We only have so many people, you can only do some many projects- we’ve got to prioritize here.”

Pitts said the decision was made based on the service they can provide with the number of employees they have.

He said residents still have plenty of options.

“There was a question raised in regards to a container in Little Dover by the area councillor,” he said. “If memory serves me correctly, I think Little Dover (residents) had to travel 4.9 kilometres- I don’t foresee that as being an undue hardship.”

Pitts said those residents can use the bulky item container in nearby Charlos Cove.

He said residents can also leave bulky waste, excluding car parts and construction materials, at their curb on the last collection day of each month.
