MP say federal budget supports local tourism operators

A local Member of Parliament one of the federal budget’s highlights is support for hard-hit tourism operators.

Mike Kelloway, the MP for Cape Breton-Canso, says it includes $1 billion in spending for the sector battered by COVID-19.

Kelloway tells The Hawk a share of that money will go a long way in our region.

“(It’s) direct investments into things like the local festivals, heritage celebrations, local museums, and the local mom-and-pop shops that need some extra dough to get through this summer and into the next summer.”

Kelloway says the money will help cover operating expenses.

He says the pandemic has gutted businesses that rely on the free movement of people.

“It is an infusion of money that will keep people above water.”

Kelloway says the funding will be distributed to business owners by officials with the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.
