Municipal councillors to attend meeting with Bell Aliant reps

Broadband concerns remain top-of-mind in Inverness Co.

Officials with the Cape Breton Partnership gave an update on the state of business, infrastructure and immigration in the area during March’s regular municipal council meeting Thursday afternoon.

They said they have a commitment from Bell Aliant reps for a meeting in April.

After Thursday’s meeting, Betty Ann MacQuarrie, the warden of the municipality, told The Hawk they’ll be at the presentation is Baddeck.

“(We want) to hear what they have to say,” she said. “We’re going to say that we, a lot of us, are very loyal and patriotic customers to Bell, and we are promised- and we are billed- for high-speed Internet.”

MacQuarrie said they’re not getting it now.

She said it’s important to start a discussion, because provincial officials have assigned Bell Aliant reps to build broadband infrastructure in Cheticamp and Inverness.

MacQuarrie said they’re concerned a mandated 95 per cent access to broadband means residents in a lot of rural communities will end up left out, even after the infrastructure upgrades are completed.
