Municipal reps to meet on fire service

Officials with the Town of Port Hawkesbury and Richmond Co. are set to meet to discuss fire service in Point Tupper.

Town officials had provided fire protection services for the nearby Richmond Co. community, which is largely industrial, through the Port Hawkesbury Volunteer Fire Department.

Richmond Co. councillors, who rejected a new $75,000 fire service contract for 2020-21 proposed by their town counterparts, allowed the previous fire service contract to lapse in July.

Brenda Chisholm-Beaton, the mayor of Port Hawkesbury, tells The Hawk town councillors have approved another new agreement.

“We really sincerely hope that we can come to an agreement with Richmond Co. so that there can be a win-win for everyone.”

Chisholm-Beaton says the 2019-20 contract cost a little less than $50,000.

She says the newly-approved agreement is more like the expired deal.

“That contract was approved and agreed upon between both of our municipalities,” she says. “We hope that the new proposal will be better received.”

Chisholm-Beaton says it only makes sense for Port Hawkesbury firefighters to continue to provide service, given how close they are, compared to the nearest Richmond Co. fire department in Louisdale.

Reps with both municipal units are expected to meet to review the new proposal Wednesday night.
