N.S. greenlights massive wind energy project in Guysborough County

Wind farm developers in Guysborough County have received environmental approval from the province to build up to 158 turbines.

The Ocean Lake Wind Project is planned to be the largest approved in Nova Scotia to date.

Once up and running, it will generate about 1,264 megawatts of clean energy, which is enough to power over 400,000 homes. It will also reduce Nova Scotia’s annual greenhouse gas emissions by about 1.94 million tonnes – the equivalent of taking about 420,000 gas-powered cars off the road, according to government officials.

They say construction is expected to begin near the communities of New Harbour, Goldboro, Larry’s River, Lundy, and Roachvale in 2029, and will take about 5 years to complete.

The project will create between 400 and 500 construction jobs, and another 40 to 50 people will be hired for operations. The project is expected to generate about $11 million in annual tax revenue for the Municipality of the District of Guysborough.

Ocean Lake Wind Project developers must comply with 61 terms and conditions designed to protect the environment and human health.
