A local charity that helps support women and children fleeing violence, is teaming up with Tim Horton’s for their Smile Cookie campaign and the housing coordinator says it feels fantastic.
In an interview with our newsroom, Patrick McKenna from The Naomi Society says it took a few years to get accepted but now they are very thankful.
“Collin Boyd Jr., who is the local owner of the four Tim Horton’s here, he and his partner, they’re fantastic people. So, just to be accepted we just felt really great,” says McKenna.
According to the Tim Horton’s website, the Smile Cookie campaign has been around since 1996 and has raised more than $150 million for select charities every year.
The money earned for The Naomi Society, according to Mckenna, will go toward building 10 units of affordable homes on a development called Sugarloaf in Antigonish.
Sugarloaf is a large parcel of land that was purchased and donated by local physicians to have more than 100 units of affordable homes built on it. The Antigonish Affordable Housing Society has a chunk of it and so does The Naomi Society.
McKenna says, designing and building homes is not cheap.
“So, every little bit helps, and this is a big bit. This is really exciting,” explains McKenna. “The money is coming at a very good time for us.”
He says he’s hopeful they will be able to be a part of the campaign next year as well but in the meantime encourages businesses, schools and organizations to place bulk orders once the campaign kicks in.
The Smile Cookie campaign runs April 27 to May 3.
