The NDP candidate in Inverness said she’s focused on making the region better for young people.
Joanna Clark said young families want to come to Inverness County, but there are barriers.
Clark told the Hawk one of the biggest is access to housing.
“There’s such a shortage of long-term rentals,” she said. “I think that housing really does tie into a lot of the other issues we’re facing, because it’s hard to get professionals to come in, say for healthcare jobs and childcare jobs, when they don’t have anywhere to live.
Clark said access to childcare, internet and healthcare are important to young people and everyone else.
She said young people face additional challenges.
“Right now, especially with the pandemic, we know that there’s a mental health crisis,” she said. “Students are dealing with debt, the climate crisis, inaccessible post secondary education, precarious work, and all these really hard barriers to overcome.”
Clark said there’s an idea young people are apathetic to politics, but she said that’s simply not the case.
