New Antigonish Co. roundabout open to traffic

You may have driven through Antigonish Co.‘s newest roundabout.

Work to install a new traffic circle at the Beech Hill Rd.-Hwy. 4 intersection, which was announced following a number of crashes and near misses in the area, started in September; the project was expected to be finished by the end of October or early November, but ended up taking longer.

After December’s regular municipal council meeting Monday night, Owen McCarron, the warden of Antigonish Co., said they’re happy to have it open to traffic.

“It looks really good- everything went well,” he said. “The weather really cooperated for the contractor- we’re quite pleased with it, it’s lit up nicely.”

McCarron said it’s fully functioning at this point.

He said there’s just a bit of minor work remaining.

“There’s a few beautification pieces that need to be added, and then just some line painting which then will allow them to open the lane going to the east.”

McCarron said Hwy. 4 eastbound between Beech Hill Rd. and South River Rd. will re-open to traffic once those final pieces are finished.

He said that should happen by Christmas.
