New area code coming to the Maritimes in 2028

A new area code will be introduced in Nova Scotia and P.E.I as demand for telephone numbers continues to grow.

The CRTC has approved area code 851 as a new overlay for the existing 902 and 782 region. The new code will take effect on May 27, 2028, and will be assigned to new phone numbers as current numbering resources are expected to run low by 2029.

The addition of area code 851 will not require existing customers to change their phone numbers. Instead, it will operate alongside 902 and 782 across the same geographic area.

The CRTC says the new area code will help ensure a continued supply of phone numbers for residents and businesses in both provinces.
