New doctor is a good start, more to do- group spokesperson

There’s a new doctor in Port Hawkesbury.

Dr. Tobechi Okeke arrived in the town in March, 13 months after he first visited on a recruitment trip.

A spokesperson for the Cape Breton South Recruiting for Health group says it’s a good start.

Trevor Boudreau told The Hawk Morning Show they’re always trying to find more doctors.

“Health isn’t just a doctor- health is a way of life,” he said. “There’s a lot of people who support our health in our communities, and it’s important to have that compliment for us all.”

Boudreau said their work is just starting.

He said they’re asking for everyone’s help.

“We know there are people who don’t have a physician right now- if we don’t have all those people on a list that don’t have a doctor, they’re going to say ‘Well you don’t need three or four more doctors’,” he said. “We know, based on the number of physicians and nurse practitioners who have retired or moved on, (that) we’re short doctors.”

Boudreau said the best thing you can do is get on the waitlist for a doctor if you don’t have one.

He says that list is how provincial officials decide to spend health care money.
