New Nova Scotia Housing Program to Address Housing Crisis

Nova Scotia has a new housing program.

Two days of meetings held by StFX’s Build Together program in Antigonish culminated in the formation of a new provincial association aimed to strengthen the community housing sector.

The Nova Scotia Non-Profit Housing Association will work to promote the mobilization, empowerment, growth, and sustainability of non-profit housing providers and groups that support their work to respond to the need for safe accessible and affordable housing in the province, particularly for those living on low incomes.

The meetings were held at St Francis University back in October and more then 80 people attended and endorsed an interim board of directors for the association. “The Antigonish meeting was inspiring, it opened all kinds of new avenues for the future of community housing in Nova Scotia.” says Stephan Corriveau the Executive Director of The Community Housing Transformation Centre. “A province wide not for profit housing association is a significant vehicle for leveraging knowledge and capacity ultimately allowing for a more robust and impactful sector. It represents a meaningful step towards solving the housing crisis.”

A 13-person interim board along with 20 others from communities across the province have created three collaborative groups to build the foundation for NSNPHA with a goal of holding its inaugural general meeting before April of 2023
