New Shark Week Documentary Explores Nova Scotia’s Great White Highway

Shark Week on Discovery Channel is about to kick off again. Last year and this year, Nova Scotia has been featured prominently because of the increase in great white shark and other shark sightings.

Great White Highway premieres Saturday, August 1 at 9:00 PM AST on Discovery and Discovery+. The documentary features the first-ever television interview with Taylor Fortune, Canada’s only confirmed survivor of a great white shark attack. Fortune recounts the near-fatal encounter she experienced off Cape Breton in 2021.

The film also follows scientists from Canada and the United States as they study great white shark movements along Nova Scotia’s coastline, an East Coast migration route now known as the “Great White Highway.” Researchers are using drones, sonar, underwater cameras, and acoustic tracking technology to better understand when sharks arrive, where they spend their time, and when they leave.

While experts stress there is no evidence that sharks are becoming more aggressive, the documentary explores whether rising shark numbers are increasing the chances of encounters with swimmers, divers, and paddlers.

The doc is produced by Nova Scotia-based Tell Tale Productions! Check out the trailer below!
