Newest MODG councillor says he’s excited for opportunity

The newest councillor in the Municipality of the District of Guysborough says he has big shoes to fill.

Dave Hanhams won the District 4 byelection Saturday, and will replace Blair George, who died in an ATV crash in January; he represented the district for more than 30 years.

Hanhams tells The Hawk there are a few issues councillors will have to work on based on what he heard from residents during the campaign.

“A lot of the campaign stuff I heard going around was transparency and stuff like that- people want to be informed more (about) what’s going on, so I plan on keeping people informed in my district,” he says. “Also (I’ll be) working on job creation and working with the other councillors to try to bring things forward, and to work together as a whole.”

Hanhams says he’ll be sworn in May 1.

He says it will be hard to take George’s seat at the council table.

“I’m not going to replace him, that’s for sure,” he says. “(I’m) just going to do what I can, and hopefully people will appreciate what I can do.”

Hanhams says he heard some concerns from residents while he was campaigning.

He says he’ll bring those issues to his fellow councillors after he is sworn in.
