Northern Pulp prepares for layoffs as Boat Harbour Act deadline approaches

In a public statement released Thursday, Norther Pulp says they’re preparing to shut down if not given an extension to the Boat Harbour Act’s Jan. 31 deadline.

It’s the latest in a series of escalating moves by the company to force the provincial government to grant them an extension to replace their Boat Harbour site.

Northern Pulp says, without a decision, they’re preparing to lay off 300 mill workers and cancel contracts with suppliers, contractors, and woodlot operators.

Two major protests took place in the province Thursday: one in Pictou Landing First Nation in support of upholding the deadline; one in Halifax in support of the provincial government granting the extension.

Premier Stephen McNeil is set to announce his decision on the Boat Harbour Act Friday.
