Officials with the Nova Scotia Landowners and Forest Fibre Producers Association says a new forestry review is positive.
Bill Lahey, the president of the University of King’s College, released an independent review calling for “ecological forestry” Tuesday.
Kingsley Brown, the president of the Nova Scotia Landowners and Forest Fibre Producers Association, says Lahey has done a great job.
Brown tells The Hawk everyone involved in forestry in the eastern part of the province can feel proud.
“Eastern Nova Scotia forest owners, the contractors and silviculture workers can feel real proud,” he says. “The Lahey report really was a lift off from the kind of co-operation that is going on here in eastern Nova Scotia – it doesn’t exist anywhere else in North America.”
Brown says the Lahey report is an endorsement of the type of sustainable, responsible forestry being done in our area.
He says it’s time to end the exploitation of the province’s forests.
“We’ve had 400 years of exploitation of our forests,” he says. “We have to change the way we look after it, and this is the way Dr. Lahey looked at it- I’m pleased.”
Brown says the eastern part of the province has had these practices in place for quite some time.
