Nova Scotia says FOIPOP response rate second-best in Canada

Nova Scotia says it completed 91 per cent of freedom-of-information requests within legislated timelines last year, giving it one of the strongest compliance rates in Canada.

FOIPOP requests allow members of the public, journalists and others to formally seek access to government records and information under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

More than 3,700 requests were received during 2025-26.

The province says 82 per cent were completed within the first 30 days, while 91 per cent were finished within the full legislated timelines, which can include approved extensions.

That compares with an 89 per cent compliance rate the previous year. The province reported more than 3,800 requests in 2024-25.

Service Nova Scotia says a cross-country jurisdictional scan placed Nova Scotia second behind Yukon.

More than 460,000 pages of records were reviewed during the year.

The annual report also says 14 requests were deemed frivolous or vexatious by the Information and Privacy Commissioner, resulting in 155 individual files being closed.

The largest response to a single application totalled 47,165 pages.

More than 200 privacy impact assessments and consultations were also completed.

The province says new rules introduced this year were intended to deal with frivolous and vexatious requests and allow staff to focus on other applications.

The report was released during Right to Know Week, which runs from Sept. 28 to Oct. 2.

A new Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act is scheduled to come into effect April 1, 2027.
