Florence Shaw

It is with much love and deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our dear Mom, grandmother & sister Katherine Florence Shaw, 77 of West Bay Centre, which occurred on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at St. Anne’s Community & Nursing Care Center, Arichat, surrounded by her loving family.

Mom was raised in Dundee and was the daughter of the late Alexander and Cassie (Matthews) MacRae.

Mom loved spending time with her family and friends and family gatherings. She loved music and her and Dad could be found at many concerts throughout the year. She loved going to dances, playing darts and cards especially playing Skip-Bo, TV bingo or board games. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren, coloring with them or playing cards or board games or going to watch them play at their many sporting events, even sitting in a cold rink.

Mom was a lot of fun and was up for any road trip, whether it was going on shopping trips or simply packing lunch and going on day trips. She was an avid reader and loved doing crossword and sudoku puzzles.

While Mom was a stay-at-home Mom, she was also a bookkeeper and once her children were grown, she worked for several years at the vineyard in Marble Mountain.

Florence is survived by daughters, Connie (Robert) Calder, St. George’s Channel; Jean (Gilles) Joyce, Dundee & Sondra (Bradley) Malcolm, Kempt Road; son Daniel (Ashley), Antigonish and grandchildren, Matthew and Braeden Calder, Kathryn Joyce, Andrew and Jacob Malcolm, Tori, Chase and Jackie Shaw; Brother Duncan (Debbie) MacRae, Dundee; Sisters-In-Law, Colleen MacRae, Dundee, Christine MacKay, West Bay & Gladys Shaw, West Bay Centre and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Florence was predeceased by her husband of 50 years Alex and by her sister Mabel (Arthur) Fougere, brother Henry MacRae, sister-in-law Miriam MacRae, brothers-in-law Jackie Shaw and Allan MacKay.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of the St. Anne’s Community & Care Center for the compassion & kindness shown to Mom during her time there.

Visitation will take place 4-8 pm on Sunday, October 25th at Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral service will be held Monday, October 26 at 11 am at the West Bay United Church with private family burial to follow. Rev. Jack Canning presiding. Memorial donations may be made to the Diabetic Association, Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia or the charity of one’s choice.

You will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.

“Those we love don’t go away. They walk beside us every day, unseen, unheard, but always near; still loved, still missed, and forever dear.“
