James John “Jim” Richard

We are saddened to announce the passing of James John (Jim) Richard, 84, of Canso, on Wednesday, October 28, surrounded by his family and so much love.

Jim is survived by Kathy, his wife of 61 years; daughter, Michelle (Judi); son, Shane (Tami); grandson, Kameron; brother Bill; sister Sharon (Cathryn); many nieces and nephews; and his longtime friend, Dave MacMillan, who was like a brother. Jim was predeceased by his father, John Richard; mother, Annie Richard; sisters, Dorothy Bennett (Shirl); Shirley Bouchie (Elliot); brother, Enos Richard (Anita); and sister-in-law, Brenda Richard.

Jim believed in working hard and took great pride in his craft as a carpenter, never missing a day of work. He believed in looking after the people around him; he valued friendship and community. If someone needed a hand, Jim was there. A special friend group was the gang at Babe’s, where Jim could regularly be found. Great conversations were had, and all the problems of the world were solved, often reflecting the comments from his favourite TV show, “The View”. He was also a great storyteller, and whether reminiscing about days gone by or discussing world events, Jim could weave a story with humour and his own unique perspective.

Jim was also a talented musician. He picked up a guitar in his youth and never looked back, playing in bands and embracing music even more fully in retirement. Jim and Kathy spent many happy years attending music festivals throughout the province where you could often find Jim at a jam or on stage, guitar in hand. As well, he shared his music at many fundraisers and community events. Jim often remarked that he was so fortunate to play with so many amazing musicians who became good friends.  The CDs he recorded will now become treasured keepsakes for all who enjoyed Jim’s Johnny Cash sound. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

Jim’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the many medical professionals, especially Home Care and VON workers who cared for him and supported his family throughout his brief illness. A special acknowledgment goes to Martha Ferguson for her kindness, compassion and care.

As per Jim’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A family graveside burial will be held at the Star of the Sea Cemetery in Canso, Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. A celebration of life will be held at the Canso Firehall from 1- 4 p.m. on November 15, where family and friends will join together to share stories and, of course, some music in his honour. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Star of the Sea Cemetery Fund or Palliative Care Services, Eastern Memorial Hospital.

Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com
