Madeline Maria Cook

Madeline (Beranger) Cook 1927 – 2026

The children of Madeline Cook are incredibly sad to announce her passing on Monday, April 13, 2026, at 98 years young.

Madeline was born in beautiful River Bourgeois, Cape Breton. Her parents were Mary (Landry) and James H. Sampson. There were twelve children and Madeline was predeceased by Albert, Arthur, Anselm, Bernard, Joseph, Gregory, Elizabeth, Bernadette, and Lena. She is survived by sister Mary and brother Benedict Sampson.

She was predeceased by husband Arthur Beranger, youngest son Alphonse, and grandson Joel Beaver. Her children are Carol Beaver (Ren), Gregory Beranger (Judy), Beverly Carmichael (Al), Ursula Campbell, and daughter-in-law Tania Beranger. Second husband Harry Cook predeceased her.

Madeline was proud grandmother to Clayton, Scott B., Nathan, Andrea, Jocelyn, Paul, Scott C, James (Jamie) and Judy’s sons Mark and Peter. Also, great grandmother to Liam, Sophie, Cole, Sadie, Maddie, Maria, Sophia and William.

Mom loved her family dearly, including many nieces and nephews who stayed connected. Mom was easy to love, so kind and friendly talking to friends and strangers alike. She had a beautiful smile and loved it when people said she looked so young!

Mom was a devoted member of the Catholic Church and the Catholic Women’s League all her life and was true to the Christian teachings of sharing her “Time, Talent and Treasure.” She was an award-winning quilter and had donated hundreds of items and quilts to various charities, such as her church, IWK Children’s Hospital and Ronald MacDonald House.

She supported dozens of worthy causes, especially for children and the poor in underdeveloped countries.

Mom loved going for walks, playing cards, bingo and travelling. She visited ten countries with church groups or family. Her and dad raised the family in Halifax but in later years she returned to River Bourgeois. She missed Cape Breton when she made her final move to Dartmouth, but she adjusted well and loved her new friends and neighbours.

She passed peacefully surrounded by her family and we will miss her dearly. Thank you to Opal Ridge staff for the support and care for the past 6 months. Private family funeral.
