Officials announce funding to remove abandoned vessels

Government funding is being made available to remove 14 abandoned vessels across the province.

Provincial officials have received almost $560,000 from the federal Abandoned Boats Program; they’re also kicking in close to $34,000 of their own funding for a total of more than $593,000.

There are clean-up sites in each of the four Quad Counties- Ben’s Cove in Antigonish Co., Drum Head in Guysborough Co., Margaree Harbour in Inverness Co., and Lennox Passage in Richmond Co.

Vessels scheduled for removal include both commercial and private vessels; removals started in January, and will continue through 2021.

— Feltzen South, Lunenburg County
— Sandy Cove, Digby County
— Margaree Harbour, Inverness County
— Cape Forchu, Yarmouth
— Mira River, Cape Breton
— Prospect, Halifax Regional Municipality (five vessels)
— Weymouth, Digby County
— Ben’s Cove, Antigonish County
— Drum Head, Guysborough County
— Lennox Passage, Richmond County
