Municipal councillors in Antigonish Co. have held a public hearing on a proposed amendment to the fringe plan area’s land use bylaw.
The amendment would add a special requirement to allow buildings to have no more than 29 per cent of total floor area used as bedrooms.
It applies to three zones- residential (R1), multiple unit residential (R2) and rural general (RG-1).
After March’s regular municipal council meeting Monday night, Hughie Stewart, Antigonish Co.’s deputy warden, said John Bain with the Eastern District Planning Commission presented to them.
“You get 20 places in a (building) that’s considered residential, and it turns out to be a lot of problems,” he said. “He spoke about not having a lot of problems, but there’s been problems right now with these new buildings.”
Stewart said they’re trying to get ahead of potential issues in the future.
“The planning committee from the County of Antigonish sat together with John Bain, our head of planning,” he said. “(We) decided that something had to be done.”
Bain told councillors an application was recently approved for a family dwelling that actually included 10 or more bedrooms.
