Pair charged in copper wire thefts from NSP substations

RCMP say they’ve arrested two people for stealing copper wire from a Nova Scotia Power substation in Port Hawkesbury.

They say similar thefts took place at substations in Pictou Co., Windsor, Lunenburg and Fort Ellis- near Stewiacke- between October and February.

Police say Jonathan Buell and Miranda Sprague, both from Stellarton, were arrested at an NSP substation on Hwy. 105 in Aberdeen Feb. 22.

They say officers followed the suspects from Stellarton, and arrested Buell inside a fenced-in area near live equipment with break-in tools and evidence of copper wire thefts; Sprague was arrested outside the fenced-in area.

Buell has been charged with possession of break-in instruments, break, enter and commit an indictable offence, and possession of stolen property; Sprague faces counts of break, enter and commit an indictable offence and possession of stolen property.

Both appeared in Port Hawkesbury Provincial Court Tuesday; they were released from custody, and are expected back in court March 30.
