Pair killed in Antigonish Co. workplace incident

Two people are dead after their boat capsized in Antigonish Co.

Officials with the Paqtnkek Mi’kmaw Nation say the two men died when their oyster boat, a 16-metre open vessel, capsized in strong winds Monday afternoon.

They say a third crew member, a woman who made the initial 911 call and was treated in hospital, survived; all three, who were employed by First Nation officials, were wearing personal flotation devices.

Police, paramedics, volunteer firefighters and an RCMP helicopter all responded to help with the search near Seagrass Lane in Bayfield- roughly 50 metres from shore- shortly after 3 p.m.

In a Facebook post, Paq’tnkek officials say members from Eskasoni’s crisis team will be in their community to help for the next three days.

They say they’ve also contacted members of a mental wellness team.

The victims have been identified as Ozzy Clair, 28, and Niko Clair, 29.
