Paqtnkek chief says re-election is recognition of recent work

The re-elected chief of a First Nations community in Antigonish Co. says he’s honoured to receive another two-year term.

Incumbent Paqtnkek Chief P.J. Prosper won November’s band election with 184 votes; Gerard Julian, the only challenger, had 50 votes.

Prosper tells The Hawk it’s a big vote of confidence.

“It provided to me a certain recognition of the work that we have been doing over the last several years,” he says. “It also provided a certain recognition, I believe, for the council.”

All five incumbent councillors were re-elected.

Prosper says he’s happy to get back to work with them.

“Council is a very critical body of leadership for our community,” he says. “It’s important to have certain consistency and willingness for council to work together.

Jeremy Paul won the newly-added sixth council seat.
