Paqtnkek grieves man and woman killed in Hwy 104 crash

The Paqtnkek Mi’kmaw Nation is grieving the loss of two of their own after a devastating crash on Highway 104.

It was Wednesday afternoon between exits 30 and 31 near Beaver Meadow when a 67-year-old man and 59-year-old woman died in a collision involving a semi-trailer in a construction zone.

Paqtnkek says it is with “heavy hearts” they acknowledge the “tragic loss of two valued members”.

“We extend our deepest condolences to their families, friends and all those affected during this incredibly difficult” says the Nation in a Facebook post. “Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who is grieving.”

To help, they have opened a Comfort Centre, Friday, at the Elders Centre for anyone who would like a space to “gather, reflect or be with others.”

Buddy Young and the Mental Wellness Team from UNSM are available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to provide support.

“We encourage all community members to stop by if you would like support, connection or simply a place to be together during this difficult time.”
