Parks Canada reminds Halifax-area trail users to keep dogs on leash

Parks Canada is reminding residents to keep their dogs on leash while exploring trails in the HRM.

They say the reminder comes after an increase in off-leash incidents at Parks Canada sites, and that park wardens are stepping up patrols at locations such as York Redoubt to mitigate the issues. They might issue fines to owners who are not following the rules.

Penalties vary depending on the situation. Fines start at about $200 for having a dog off leash in areas they’re not supposed to be, and tickets can reach as much as $700 if a dog bites or injures someone.

Parks Canada says keeping dogs on leash helps protect wildlife, other trail users, and pets themselves while visiting.
